Animal Haven
(Gorgie City Farm, Edinburgh)

It’s a place that’s easy to miss

just by the railway bridge
reclaimed dereliction become haven
for those seeking rest
in the hectic city.

In the wildlife garden
frogpond and bird-filled trees
are guarded
by a misplaced Bengal Owl.

In the farmyard
muddy piglets dance
fluffy faced sheep graze
and an old angora goat limps by.

Up the hill
more goats leap on wooden planks
overlooking the playground
and Driftwood the rabbit found
on a beach.

Staff, volunteers and visitors bustle
between cafe, allotments and the stable
that a vagabond cat
has made home.

  2. As Juliet knows my great passion is making technology work for people. This website certainly does – express notions of everyday life that we sometimes forget to acknowledge and appreciate.

The farm is not only a green space for animals and humans to come eye-to-eye but a powerful social melting pot where strangers become friends.

  3. AWwww .. Driftwood! We bunny lovers all over the world are glad to see Driftwood in there!

  5. Eoin – thanks for your comment, I was also thinking of making a second version of this poem to encompass the fame of Sam the Lamb.

Rabbits’ Guy, I had to get a bunny in there somewhere for all you bunny bloggers!

Gillena – could possibly be a little confusing!
